Well, so far, the Dems haven't provided any answers for replacing The Patriot Act.

I am for The Patriot Act because the Dems keep complaining about it, although they keep voting for it.

When they can come up with something better, other than whining all the time, then my ears are open. But, I believe they have no better ideas, just bitching about it the last few years.

While I agree we certainly approached priorities in a way that was really ineffective at security and protection pre Sept/11, I don't think the answer is in things like The Patriot Act.

The concern over core, fundamental freedoms being abridged for the first time in the countries history, is a really concerning & important issue. So is the detention of suspects for lengthy periods of time, with no access to habius corpus, and then many were found not guilty of any charges brought against them.

I'm aware it's a primarily a difference in priorities, I just think there must be other avenues that don't change our experience of that central attribute, freedom.

daredevil92103, I must agree with Devil Dog. You use Che Guevara - the master of "disappearing" his political opponents - as your avatar, yet you fear living in a "police state"? Have you no sense of irony? As Steve said, there are plenty of anti-war folks running about "protesting" who have yet to be picked up, questioned, or "disappeared" by the spooooky CIA. Sorry, but your concerns just don't add up.

Daredevil,

It is hard to digest your opinion about a police state when you have a picture of a man (Che) who thought of our country as an oppressive country.

I, for the life of me, don't understand the iconic stamp but on Che Guevara. Consider the many people that he executed who never saw a day in court and then you want to make "what if" statements about our detention policies of supposed terrorists?

Hmmm, credibility is everything!

When I hear the "Where's Obama?" cry I can only recall that he wasn't in an aspirin factory in Sudan; they knew he was entertaining the hometown royalty at the farm in A'gahn; they couldn't draw up the indictment to take him when he was offered.....not to mentioned the suppression of investigative intelligence between sections of one agency. And that was before the spot-lights went on.
When it was necessary to take the steps, they balked at corrective legislation, applied litmus tests to allies and eventually admitted ....'we didn't know drones could do that'.
But, even with the fears of draconian policing methods being employed, there'll be few left to take part in any forum if the threats against the West are not countered. Sadly, we do have a record of errors in our lives and our young history of a country and even over the period of what we call Western Tradition. But with that humility we should recognize with pride the steps we've taken to correct them. This is no time, while we can still cast them, to be afraid of our own shadows.

right now, but clinton just got a nasty letter about "helping the enemy" just by asking if we had a gameplan on leaving iraq. i dont really like clinton at all, but that executive order bush gave on the 17th is just too vague. maybe they wont be running free for much longer. i dont think 9/11 was an inside job, though. i just dont want to live in a police state.

i'm not sure what i am, but my conservative friends call me a liberal. i would love to hear your side on some of the issues you mentioned above, and i would try to explain mine. the only one i can think of right now is the john doe thing. what's to stop the cia from grabbing some guy and saying that it was because of suspected terrorist activity? it could turn into a way to get rid of someone that disagrees politically with the current gov't., or virtually any reason at all, without any proof. dont you think a person has a right to face their accuser? at least to make sure it isnt just some new version of COINTELPRO?
