Ron Paul Clutches Reagan’s Coattails

paul.jpg

Ron Paul supporters are living in an absolute fantasy world.  On top of their insane proposal that we rip our troops out of Iraq and leave it to Al-Qaeda; and believing that just ignoring the terrorists will miraculously make it go away, they use Ronald Reagan’s good name to promote this fella who blames us for 9/11.

The one quote out there that they keep using is the following:

“Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense. As a former Air Force officer, he knows well the needs of our armed forces, and he always puts them first. We need to keep him fighting for our country.” — Ronald Reagan

Let’s take a look at Ronald Reagan’s foreign policy and the ways in which he handled it.

In 1982, our Embassy in Beirut was bombed.  At the request of Lebanon, Reagan sent troops to create a peace-keeping force between Muslims and Christians.

Would Ron Paul or his supporters have approved of this judging by their standards put forth today?  Of course not.

After the peace-keeping force was established, Muslims showed us just how peaceful they were and blew up the Marine barracks a year later killing hundreds of other American troops.  Reagan (after the Democrats in Congress harped and demanded so) withdrew our troops out of Lebanon.

Would Ron Paul or his supporters approve of this judging by the standards put forth by them today?  Of course they would!  We backed away and decided to not “intervene” anymore.

Three years later after we left, Muslims must have still been sore at Americans when they decided to hijack an Italian cruise-ship in 1985 where they decided to shoot a 69 year old passenger (American) and throw him overboard with his wheelchair.  It looks like choosing to “pull out and not intervene” didn’t work out so well.

Reagan responded by having the animals captured and handed them to Italy, who then made sure they returned safely to Iraq (the place where terrorists never lived but for the constant “intervening” of the United States).

After indirectly turning those terrorists over to safe harbor in Iraq (something that Reagan had no “direct” hand in), Muslim extremists struck again by bombing a West Berlin dance club in 1986 killing more Americans.

I wonder by looking at this crucial time period what Ron Paul and his supporters (better known as “dreamers” and “9/11 conspiracy crazies”) thinks the appropriate time table would be to sit and wait for Muslim fanatics to STOP attempting to hurt us and our interests.

I guarantee when Ronald Reagan said what he said about Ron Paul above, he had no idea that one day he would propagandize an insane position to rally support from 9/11 conspiracy theorists in order to get nominated for President.

It is clear that Muslims don’t want peace ever with the United States.  Paul and his supporters at this point are just as dangerous to our security as liberals are.

Nazis Drinking Vodka

Ok.  I’m intellectually honest.  Even after I write a piece defending GW, I sometimes can follow with a criticism.  In a 2001 press conference with Russian President, Vladimir Putin, Bush said the following of Putin -

I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul; a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country. And I appreciated so very much the frank dialogue.

You gotta ask what the hell GW was thinking.  Since that press conference, Putin has shown himself to be an authoritarian dictator bent on a national-socialist (yes – fascist!) form of government for his nation.  Putin has stripped Russian citizens of their freedoms, stifled all political opposition, murdered opponents and detractors, enabled terrorists, and opposed the US at every turn when it comes to foreign policy.

In a scary scenario reminiscent of the Hitler Youth, the Kremlin has established the “Nashi.”  Not satisfied with the Russian youth’s efforts to act as thugs against opponents and proselytize for their form of fascism, Moscow has begun asking these young ones to ”get it on” for the sake of the motherland. No – really.

Remember the mammoths, say the clean-cut organisers at the youth camp’s mass wedding. “They became extinct because they did not have enough sex. That must not happen to Russia”.

Obediently, couples move to a special section of dormitory tents arranged in a heart-shape and called the Love Oasis, where they can start procreating for the motherland.

With its relentlessly upbeat tone, bizarre ideas and tight control, it sounds like a weird indoctrination session for a phoney religious cult.

But this organisation – known as “Nashi”, meaning “Ours” – is youth movement run by Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin that has become a central part of Russian political life.

I guess you could say that fascism breeds fascism and fascists will breed more fascists.  At least, that is what the Kremlin is hoping will happen.

Bush Blows Up Minnesota Bridge

Damned George Bush!  He orchestrated 9/11 and sent planes flying into the World Trade Center, killing thousands.  He intentionally refused to provide funds for levy repairs in New Orleans and refused to endorse Kyoto.  Result? The catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina (note that he was not only reponsible for the devastation in New Orleans, he was also responsible for the hurricane forming in the first place).  And now he’s really gone and done it!  He caused that bridge collapse in Minneapolis!  Oh the humanity!

Ok.  Think this is all satire?  Think I am exaggerating?  Politico.com does a good job of capturing early Democrat assessments of the bridge situation.  The Dems didn’t wait long to announce that they have discovered the truth behind the bridge collapse.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who chairs the appropriations subcommittee that funds transportation programs, slammed President Bush for threatening to veto the transportation bill because it exceeds his initial budget request.

“This is what I worry about every day. The lack of investment in infrastructure is frightening,” Murray said. “This is what [Bush] is threatening to veto — investment in infrastructure for [roads] we go to work on every day.”

Or how about this one from his highness, the Great Senator Harry Reid?

Reid even suggested that Bush has been too distracted by the Iraq war and post-Sept. 11 national security needs to focus on the country’s water, sewer and transportation infrastructure.

“Since 9/11, we have taken our eye off the ball,” Reid said.

So far, it’s been fairly benign, but wait til the Congressional investigations open up.  These idiots will have a heyday with this one.  They’ll ignore the fact that the state of Minnesota had a $2 billion+ surplus.  They’ll ignore the fact that spending of federal funds for highway and interstate repairs and projects (which account for the overwhelming majority of transportation funds used by states nationwide) are mostly left to the discretion of each respective state.

Nah.  It was W’s fault.  One more reason that he is the worst President in the history of this nation.

A Healthy Proposal

Raj Bal has a good idea.  Instead of covering up the cost of health care, let’s open it up to scrutiny.  Be honest – when was the last time you really examined an itemized accounting from your doctor or hospital visit?  Some of us have, but we usually don’t lose sleep over it  – our insurance company picks it up.  We shop around for the best price on our new car, but we don’t ask for prices upfront when we go to see our doctor.

But what about procedures and costs that are not covered by insurance?  Shouldn’t we know ahead of time what we are getting into?  You don’t care because the insurance industry has got your back, right?

Today, individuals pay 25 percent of the $1.9 trillion a year spent on health care — the same percentage as employers. According to a March, 2007 McKinsey Quarterly article (“The Retail Revolution in Health Care”), consumer-directed health plans now have more than six million enrollees.

Didn’t know that, did you? Bal suggests that we need make medical costs more transparent.  We need to make the health care profession more accountable.  Just as auto sales are based on competition in the free market, so should our health care.  Bal quotes HHS Secretary Michael Levitt as saying, “As we give consumers better information on how their health care dollars are spent, they will demand more value for their money, and the result will be better treatment at lower costs.”

Exactly!  I admire our doctors and have been a strong proponent of caps and limitations on medical malpractice lawsuits.  The frivilous nature of such suits, the willingness of juries to buy into these suits and the size of the awards has driven up the cost of malpractice insurance.  This, in turn, has left many states that have loose limits on such claims facing a shortage of doctors.

On the other hand, I am asking the medical profession to be responsible to their patients.  After all, we are consumers of a service and should be entitled to a fair accounting of services and some knowledge beforehand of what to expect.  Even if insurance companies pick up most of the tab, doctors will have to publish set rates and fees so we know what our insurance is paying – not to mention the costs that they don’t cover.

Think about it for a moment.  One of the biggest complaints about Washington is waste and overcharges in regards to Medicare and Medicaid.  What if doctors were suddenly accountable to the government?  What if hospitals could no longer charge $150 for an aspirin?  Maybe this entire concept is too idealistic, but I believe it maybe a better way to cut health care costs and save the government billions than socialized (oh excuse me…..”universal”) health care coverage could ever accomplish.
