Football Is Here At Last

wavingouflag.gif

I promised you this blog.  I know it’s not political in nature, but this is the time of year that I live for.  Last night, the high school stadiums here in Texas were filled with moms, dads and students cheering on their boys as they begin their 4 month journey towards, what they hope, will be a state championship.

Here in Texas, like many other places, football is part of the culture.  It brings together communities for one Friday night or Saturday afternoon a week to celebrate these young men who have worked so hard to be on that field.  Most of them have donned the pads since a time before they could even spell the word “football” in crayon.  To me and countless others, this time of year is very special.  It unites so many of us in a way that very few things can.  There is no discussion of politics, no differentiation between race, religion or creed.  It is all about community and the guys on the field.

At a time in our nation’s history when things seem so polarized on a political level, it’s reassuring to know that there are still past times like football that can bring so many of us together.  The rivalries maybe intense between some teams, but the bond underlying it all transcends those rivalries.

So to my boys at Midland Lee High School and the University of Oklahoma – go out and hit ‘em hard!  It’s good to know that some things are still just done for fun.

  1. Texas High School football is the best. Go Flower Mound, Maruaders!

Thanks for the post Philip. You’d be almost perfect if you would stop cheering for the Sooners! :P

  2. PSUdain,

On the subject of football, I would just like to point out what glorious weekend it was. PSU crushed Florida International (as we should have!). Almost more importantly, though, Michigan lost to the unknown and unranked Appalachian State University!! How great is that?! And Notre Dame is looking shaky, too, after that loss to Georgia Tech. This could prove to be another great year, especially with OSU at our house…

    Fight on, State!

  3. Philip,

The Michigan upset was BIG. Shows you that the guys have to show up ready to play every week and take nothing for granted. The ND game shocked me. I don’t think GT was as good as ND may be just bad.

And my Sooners looked pretty awesome too! Bring on the Hurricanes.

  4. PSUdain,

We’ll see about the Irish this week, when my Nittany Lions take them on…I write this about 5 hours pre-game.

    GO STATE BEAT IRISH!
