I was saddened to learn that actor, Charlton Heston, has passed away. I’m not a huge movie buff although I have seen a few of the history-based classics that defined Heston’s career. He was a great actor, a good man and an anomaly in Hollywood. He served as president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003 and was a conservative voice on other issues such as affirmative action and abortion.
Once the highest paid actor in Hollywood, Charlton Heston had no qualms in his later years about risking his image among the Hollywood liberal elite and espousing conservative causes. He was a dependable endorsement for principled GOP candidates. Unlike other Hollywood types, though, his endorsement was meaningful. I’ve always scoffed at Hollywood endorsements by echoing Rush Limbaugh’s critique that (paraphrased) “I’m tired of people who can’t make a sandwich trying to make a statement.” Heston did not fall into that category.
Rest in peace, Mr. Heston. You were a rare breed. And you were a Hollywood figure that I could look up to.
