I like it! And thank God. If smokers have to get socked, if beer-lovers have to get robbed for liquor tax, then absolutely, people buying porn should be subject to a “vice” tax.

Californians are looking to correct the deficit by imposing a hefty tax on porn. And how funny it is to watch porn actresses come out and scream about how this is going to hurt the porn industry.
It’s funny, Americans understand the damage of high tax rates when it comes to things like porn. But in the case of an honest mom and pop shop, it’s much easier for them to look the other way.

won’t this make free pornography illegal since it escapes being taxed?
HAH! Why I find this so funny, I don’t know. But I can’t stop laughing about it.
A porn tax! Would it be itemized? And does that mean that Good Vibes (with an SF branch and a Berkeley branch) would go out of business? I can see it now… “Sure, I was willing to pay 49.99 for Naughties in Gym Shorts, but adding another fifty cents is just ridiculous! I’ll just go make my own!”
Seriously, I’m dying here!
Vote – not sure. I think actual tangible porn sales like books, magazines, and movies, dvds, will be taxed. There generally is not sales tax on e-commerce based products (assuming you are talking about internet porn.)
I think the Dems are trying to tax us on e-mail usage though so who knows, tax might be in the internet’s future.
AFW – I know. I’m excited for this and btw it will be a bit more than 50 cents. They are proposing – in California 25% tax. So on 49.99, that would be 12.50, right? Yikes!!!!
To be honest, I am surprised the porn industry does as well as it does with all the free stuff available online now.
But I guess it does. I don’t agree with high taxation, but watching porn actresses suddenly become interested in political policy is certainly the best thing I’ve seen happen in a long time.
Where did I get the 1% idea? Still, I can’t figure out why there’s a pay porn industry anymore, either.
This still cracks me up, though.
Now THAT’S the “small government” right I know;)
I disagree with high taxation of any kind – but it does not hurt my feelings to see it done to porn. Honestly, it’s like watching chickens coming home to roost.
The good news is now that it’s been introduced, we’ll have to watch Democrats actually debate this.
The porn industry is acutally already falling on hard times — so I hear — due to the millions of people out there who are willing to post their own “adventures” for free. Steep taxation will put the small guys out of business. (Pun intended.)
The tax I fear is one you mentioned earlier. Yep, sooner or later, the government is going to attempt to tax our email. It will no doubt be “for the children,” and suddenly, we’ll be paying a dime for every email we send. I just hope technology moves faster than the government and comes up with ways around the tax once it happens.
