Sho’ah

Not one single country in the world was willing to take the hundreds of thousands of Jews attempting to flee the Nazi Holocaust. Not even America. Not even England. Nobody. When the world turned their backs on the Jews, they went to their historical homeland. As if to say, “great, you go there, we’ll let you have it as long as you stay out of our countries,” the League of Nations agreed to start the process of giving the Jews a swath of barren desert that the Arabs hardly lifted a finger to improve. So away the Jews went, doing what they could to get away from Nazi terrorists. Today, the Jews refer to the Holocaust as “Sho’ah,” or simply “the calamity.”

The realities of the Holocaust are hardly spoken of today. Americans largely don’t want to think about it; it makes us uncomfortable because of the horrors suffered at the hands of the Nazis. We know it was horrible. When we hear the word “holocaust” we understand that it included unspeakable acts of barbaric inhumanity, yet not only do we not really discuss it, we attach words like “Nazi” and “Holocaust” to politicians we don’t like or actions we disagree with–most of which have absolutely no parallel to the realities that existed during those times.

As part of Hitler’s “final solution to the Jewish question,” millions upon millions of Jews were first forced to wear yellow six-pointed Jewish stars. Then their businesses were taken by the Nazis. Then they were forced from their homes, rounded up and herded like cattle onto trains. They were taken to concentration camps, where they were sorted (again, much like cattle) into two groups: those that were fit would work, and the rest would go directly to the gas chambers. The gas chambers meant you were stripped naked, your hair completely shorn, and you were shoved into a massive chamber under the pretense of showering with a hundred other people. Then Zyklon-B gas was pumped in, killing everyone inside. The bodies would be stripped of anything useful (gold or silver teeth especially) and cremated in massive ovens. At times, so many would be cremated that the ash would blanket the nearby German towns like a ghastly, eerie snow-like substance.

Being allowed to live in the camps was often worse than dying. They were only fed enough to keep them alive, so it was not uncommon for Jewish prisoners to look like little more than skeletons covered by a thin layer of sallow skin. On top of this, they were mercilessly beaten while they were forced to do slave labor. The ammunition and bombs used by the Nazis were sometimes put together by Jews in the camps. Some Jews were used in horrific medical tests, often being slowly tortured to death. Josef Mengele tested sets of twins (sometimes by injecting their eyes with dye to change their eye color, even sewing the twins together physically to create conjoined twins). Freezing tests required the literal freezing of live people to test the best forms of resuscitation for hypothermia. Subjects were exposed to mustard gas to inflict severe chemical burns, which would then be tested for the best treatments. Severe wounds were inflicted and horrible infections deliberately caused with wood and glass shavings to test sulfonamide and other antimicrobial drugs.

Many different methods of sterilization were tested, including radiation and injections of iodine and silver nitrate, often with unspeakable side effects. Treatments for the injuries caused by incendiary bombs were tested by burning victims and then testing all manner of treatments, most of which eventually killed the subjects. Among the worst tests involved poisons. Most were secretly poisoned when they were fed, usually resulting in death. Some were shot with poison-tipped bullets, a tortuously slow death. Every single subject was either treated before death or simply monitored while they died, then used in autopsies to study the results.

When there was no time to herd a group of Jews to a camp, SS troops would force them to dig a massive ditch, then line them up in front of it and shoot them. The next batch of victims would be required to cover the first with a thin layer of dirt before seeing the same fate.

We tend to think of these people as faceless, nameless numbers rather than as the individuals they were, with families and lives of their own just like us. But they were people; they were human beings with dreams, hopes, loved ones and futures. Every single one experienced a hell not one of us can imagine and every one deserves to be remembered for their humanity. Their only wrong was being Jewish.

With these details in mind–and some too horrific for me to describe–please, try to compare this to what is going on in Israel and Gaza now. Tell me that Bush is the new Hitler. Tell me that today’s American Christians are equal to the Taliban or the Nazis. Tell me what being stripped of human rights really means.

Better yet, tell the Jews.

Shalom

“It’s no accident that many accuse me of conducting public affairs with my heart instead of my head.  Well, what if I do?  Those who don’t know how to weep with their whole heart don’t know how to laugh, either.”

Golda Meir once said, “we have always said that in our war with the Arabs, we have a secret weapon–no alternative.” Today, that has begun to play out yet again as Israel has been forced to act in her own defense against the militant Muslims who wish to see Israel destroyed.  Meir was the fourth-ever Prime Minister of Israel and is one of my biggest heroes.  Her wit and wisdom best describe the Israeli stance even today.

Since Israel was finally granted land and declared independence on May 14, 1948, she has been at war with her neighbors.  The land that expands from the Gaza Strip all the way to the Eastern border of Jordan had originally been promised to the Jews as Israel.  That was changed when Winston Churchill, who was every bit as anti-Semitic as Adolf Hitler (just not willing to be as publicly brutal for fear of being seen in the same light), took that land and gave 80% of it to the Palestinians in the area and the remaining 20% to the Jews after WWII.

“There is only one thing I hope to see before I die, and that is that my people should not need expressions of sympathy anymore.”

Despite Jordanian king Abdullah’s admonition that she not be in such a hurry to declare Israel a state, Meir played an extremely important role in moving the Jews toward establishing their foothold and declaring their statehood.  After hundreds of years of being scattered across the globe with no home, the Jews finally had a place to call their own.  The Arab nations wouldn’t have any of it, though, and on the day Israel declared independence they banded together and attacked with all their might.  They were soundly trounced in the Arab-Israeli War, even though the world was certain the odds were so badly stacked in their favor that Israel was doomed.

“We’ve been waiting for 2,000 years.  Is that hurrying?”

As soon as Israel won and established herself, every Arab nation violently expelled every known Jew within their borders.  Most had barely enough time to grab essentials before being forced to trek to Israel on foot.  Israel, however, refused to take such an action; the millions of Arabs that refused to leave were offered citizenship and a home.  Despite such offers of peace and acceptance, the Arab world only seethed with hatred and worked toward destroying everything that the Jews were working so hard to build for the good of all.

“I never did anything alone.  Whatever was accomplished in this country was accomplished collectively.”

Nothing has changed.  For decades, Arab Muslims who refuse to recognize Israel’s right to exist have funded militant terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Al Aqsaa Martyr’s Brigades.  They’ve given money, rations, weapons and a place to hide in an effort to break Israel.  “Palestine” has never really existed; the area was formerly the Ottoman Empire, yet if only to slight Israel, Arabs have claimed Jews are “occupying” the region and “stole” the land from the Palestinians.  They play on the emotions of the capitulating world with faux outrage over the slightest action that can be perceived as wrong in the slightest (and can be bent that way).

“It is true we have won all our wars, but we paid for them.  We don’t want victories anymore.”

Israel has worked hard for peace, but Hamas has worked harder for war.  Every time Israel agrees to a cease-fire, Hamas merely begins restocking their rockets, guns, bombs and ammunition so they can go back to killing when the cease-fire ends.  It’s almost like clockwork.  Never before has Israel reached the end of a cease-fire by instigating hostilities again.  Plenty have been broken by Hamas, thus starting the fighting over again, but never the other way around.  By way of rockets, missiles and mortars fired into Israel and militants carrying out suicide bombings, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have been murdered by terrorists over the years.

“One cannot and must not try to erase the past merely because it does not fit the present.”

Yet Hamas and their “innocent Palestinians” have somehow managed to largely make Israel look like the aggressor.  Words are twisted, pictures are either manufactured or doctored, and outright lies are spread to gain sympathy for a movement that has long since lost any right to be given credibility.  Despite the duplicity and the atrocities committed by these monsters, many Americans have given their sympathies to Hamas and the so-called “plight” of the Palestinians, decrying the “occupation” of the Palestine that has never existed.

“There’s no difference between one’s killing and making decisions that will send others to kill.  It’s exactly the same thing, or even worse.”

With the latest cease-fire ended just days ago, Hamas (practically at midnight the day of) immediately began firing rockets and missiles at Israel again, showering towns such as Sderot and Ashkelon with death yet again.  A single person killed and a handful wounded is a miracle; most incidents like this kill anywhere from 10-30 and injure more than a hundred.  Suicide bombings used to happen with alarming frequency, usually killing at least 15-20 at a time.  Israel sealed off Palestinian neighborhoods and forcibly removed Israeli settlers, yet the killing continued. Rarely did Israel react with massive acts of force or killing.  In 2005, Israel gave Gaza over to the Palestinians completely in an act of goodwill, but the killing actually intensified.

“When peace comes we will perhaps, in time, be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons.”

Today began with surprise airstrikes on precision Hamas targets in Gaza, including a large training camp and several buildings used to stock munitions for strikes against Israel.  As I write, there are reports of tanks and troops gathering for a possible invasion of Gaza.  This has been a long time coming; with tens of thousands of innocent Israelis murdered, and no end in sight to the violence being perpetrated by Hamas (and supported by the “innocent Palestinians”), it was only a matter of time before they decided that enough was enough and it was gonna be time to hit them so hard that they weren’t going to want to hit back.

“The Arabs will stop fighting us when they love their children more than they hate the Jews.”

How true.  Every quote in this passage is from Golda Meir, the Iron Lady of Israeli politics.  Her words personify how Israel feels.  They wish for peace.  “Shalom” is the Hebrew word for peace; it is commonly used as a greeting.  When the rest of the world–the nations that aren’t Muslim-led–fully realize just how much right Israel has to defend herself now, they will have the support they need to do just that.  For the next week or so I’ll be focusing on specific incidents that prove how hysterical it is to fall blindly in line with the Hamas story.

Hussein, the Christian

This has been a good-few weeks.  In the last month alone, President Elect Barack Obama has given new life to conservative hope and to Christian virtue – as a Democrat elect.

Of course there has been the relentless attacks coming from all the insane left wing blogs.

It started the day he was elected.  On November 8th, Newsweek sent radical liberals in a head-spinning roar when they gave us four reasons Obama would not be closing Guantanamo prison anytime soon.

Essentially it said everything Bush said for years.  First, sending them to the United States would give them all the rights of domestic criminals which could even have some of them released on bail while simultaneously revealing the intelligence used to capture them.  Why aren’t these good things again?

You mean Newsweek couldn’t find the time in the last, I don’t know, EIGHT YEARS to explain this to their lefty readers?

Safe to say for crazy moonbats, it is now cool to voice concern about having Gitmo detainees transferred to their local district jails and prisons.

After acknowleging that 17 of the detainees were terrorists, Qin Gang of China demanded for the return of their detainees if and when the prison is actually closed.  Knowing how China generally deals with criminals, I cannot say I have a problem with that.  Have you noticed how those 17 men have kept quiet themselves?

I gather that smelling their lemon chicken as it turns on the rotisserie; in lieu of their own flesh, is more appealing to the young “tortured” group of men.

In recent weeks and days, we keep hearing how some European countries are considering housing a few, Australia is considering taking some, but miraculously not one Hollywood celebrity or tree-hugger has come out to courageously offer up their own district jails or prisons.

Obama is a smart guy.  I am conceding this point to liberals who claimed it was more important to vote for him because he went to Harvard over Sarah Palin who actually had executive experience.  But he used his study in constitutional law to trick liberals into believing that he could do something which they thought was so easy – close Gitmo.

I have to thank Obama for that one.  It’s always fun watching the radical left get tricked into voting for someone.  It’s nice that the Democrats found one they could do that with.

We saw him in recent weeks shy away from his “promise” to raise taxes on corporations and the wealthy.  We also saw him pipe down a little on his promise to quickly withdraw from Iraq.

John McCain or Hillary Clinton both actually had voting records of raising taxes or voting against tax cuts.  But the liberals picked the guy who they thought would do more damage than McCain or Clinton would have guaranateed us as a nation.

With McCain-Feingold under his belt, liberals also would have had a better shot at successfully legislating the Fairness Doctrine under McCain than they would Obama.

Of course, liberals are now angry

Liberals are growing increasingly nervous – and some just flat-out angry – that President-elect Barack Obama seems to be stiffing them on Cabinet jobs and policy choices.

Obama has reversed pledges to immediately repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and take on Big Oil. He’s hedged his call for a quick drawdown in Iraq. And he’s stocking his White House with anything but stalwarts of the left.

The great news is that it does not stop here.  There are some extras guaranteed to sweeten the deal that Obama promises to bring us.

Liberals, gay activist groups, and People for the American Way are seething in anger over the choice to have Pastor Rick Warren deliver the invocation at Obama’s inauguration next month.  He’s a pastor!  This could never be!

The Obama campaign worked tirelessly to remind us of Hussein’s strong Christian values.  We then saw him appropriately toss out the leftist radicals known as Jeremiah Wright and Father Pfleger.

Not only is President “Hussein, the Christian” living up to his promise to reach across both party lines, it seems he’s doing a much better job at pissing off liberals than he is at pissing off Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter.

Eyebrows raised; including mine, when he recently stated that he would proudly use his middle name of Hussein as a resource to reach out to Muslims all over the world.

But then I got to thinking.  Barack Hussein Obama; as a Christian, who has stopped palling around with terrorists and has replaced radicals like Ayers and Wright with decent pastors like Rick Warren to embrace his own Christian values – is reaching out to Muslims.

Just as Christ reached out to the Jews; Hussein, the Christian is apparently trying to do the same thing with the Muslims – to show them a better way of life as Christians.

A daunting task, I agree.  But while it may seem pompous to take on such a task, it’s one I cannot seem to find in my heart to criticize.

The only trouble is, liberals hate Christians.  So, just as  Newsweek had to logically explain why Guantanamo could not be shut down overnight, the liberal media will have to eventually come around to explaining why the world is more free and peaceful under the influence of Christianity.

Case Studies in Charity and Giving

Democrats have been waiting for the correct alignment of the stars and planets to execute their New-New Deal, FDR-ish plan of big government imposition into the lives of Americans.  It seems things are aligning perfectly with a souring economy, rising unemployment and faltering markets.  And like the New Deal – this course planned by Dems will result only in swelled government spending, newly-entrenched entitlements and the further eradication of capitalism in the US.

But during this holiday season, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the generosity of citizens who give – acts of charity that mean more and do more for people than any bloated government bureaucracy or program.  It is this spirit of giving, not socialist handouts, that have historically defined this nation and the self-determination of the American people.  Amazingly enough, I found all of these examples while surfing DN- errrr….CNN.com.

CASE STUDY #1

A Christmas tradition continues in Los Angeles

A man known only as the “El Dorado Elf” handed out roughly $13,000 to the needy Tuesday.

He gave out the money in ten dollar bills to men, women and children at the Midnight Mission on Skid Row. Hundreds of people lined up at the mission, with some waiting as long as eight hours to receive their Christmas cash.

It has been a tradition since the early 1980s to hand out money at the mission around Christmastime. Back then, car dealer Ronald Moran began showing up each year in his Cadillac to pass out thousands of dollars. He was affectionately dubbed “Cadillac Santa” by grateful recipients.

After Moran died in 1992, his friend — who was the attorney for Moran’s dealership — stepped in to fill the void. The man, a 67-year-old semi-retired lawyer identified only as Bill, earned the nickname “El Dorado Elf,” because he drives a Cadillac El Dorado.

One of the more touching facts about this example is that Bill picked up where Ronald Moran left off.  The charitable tradition could have died off when Mr. Moran passed away, but there were those who believed in charity and the generosity of Mr. Moran enough to keep things alive.  I know that $10 isn’t a lot of money, but it means a lot to many people.  And the act of charity in any form is to be encouraged.

Bill said the money, which comes from himself and his friends, is more needed than ever in today’s slumping economy. “Just because I’ve taken a hit, is that any reason that the homeless should suffer?” he said. “I’ve got so much more than they’ve got.”

“It’s the highlight of my year,” beamed the El Dorado Elf.

God bless you, Bill.

CASE STUDY #2

An anonymous donor gives $1 million to victims of an apartment fire

An anonymous donor has come forward with $1,000,000 for the victims of the Burnsville apartment fire.

The Goodman Group, which owns the Burnscliff Apartment complex, says each leaseholder will receive a check for $17,543.86……

Monday’s fire destroyed a 64-unit apartment complex and left nearly 200 people homeless.

Donations of clothes, food and toys filled Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville Tuesday. The church says it now has more than enough clothes for fire victims, but it could still use hygiene items and undergarments.

Many fire victims are able to stay with family and friends. The Salvation Army is helping those who don’t have a place to stay.

An individual donor, a church, local citizens and the Salvation Army all came to the aid of these displaced folks. You can’t always plan for tragedy.  Sometimes things occur beyond your control, and it is heartening to see the community step up to the plate and provide relief for these victims of circumstance.

God Bless the community of Burnsville,  Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the Salvation Army and that unsung, anonymous hero.

CASE STUDY #3

A cookie factory reopens and gives Christmas cheer to employees

According to the article, Ashland, Ohio had been hard-hit by the current economic downturn.  The Ashway cookie factory in Ashland shut its doors in October of this year – leaving 300 workers unemployed just before the holidays.  These newly unemployed workers were faced with a decision – stay put or move elsewhere to find a job.  We know that uprooting and moving cost money, so many of these folks were likely in an untenable situation.  Now enter Lance, Inc.

Some 300 workers lost their jobs when the Archway cookie factory in Ashland, Ohio, was suddenly closed by the private equity firm that owned it. The workers also were left without benefits like health insurance.

But then Lance Inc., a Charlotte, North Carolina-based snack food company, purchased Archway at a bankruptcy auction. And last week 60 workers were asked to return immediately, with perhaps more coming back in the months ahead…..

When it promised to reopen the bakery, Lance gave all 300 former Archway workers a $1,500 prepaid debit card…..

David Singer, CEO of Lance, says the gift cards were a way of letting Ashland know the new owners are different. “We wouldn’t do it willy-nilly,” Singer says. “We do want to make money. But this is the pool of folks that we intend to hire. We just wanted to let them know who we were.”

The 60 workers rehired so far are earning their previous salary and retained their seniority. They also were provided health insurance from day one.

The bakery now produces Lance cookies that are sold to big chains like Target and Wal-Mart. But production of Archway cookies is scheduled to resume soon. Lance has told the employees that it hopes to have the plant fully operational by the end of 2009 — that is, five lines of cookies being produced simultaneously.

The new owners say that if new orders keep flowing in, more jobs will follow.

Yep.  You heard it right.  One of those greedy, money-grubbing corporations actually did something right.  Lance Inc. not only reopened the factory – they gave $1500 gift cards to the former employees (even those not immediately rehired), offered day-one health benefits and pledged to draw their employees from those who were left jobless by the factory closure.

God bless the folks at Lance Inc. for trying to do right to the unemployed workers in Ashland, Ohio.

CONCLUSION

This has been a short case study with three examples.  Now, as my former college and grad school professors would say, it is time to draw some conclusions from the case studies.  Three examples do not give cause to make sweeping generalizations, but they do offer some insight.  And in this case, we have some insight into helping others in this nation.

I hate to take these sweet, wonderful cases and turn them into something partisan – but my conclusions are derived from these examples of love, giving and charity.  Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank and other socialist sympathizers would have us believe that the government is the only answer to helping those who are unemployed, homeless, poor, destitute or victims of circumstance.  I am here today to say otherwise.

Look at who is in charge now.  Over the past decade, Obama and his wife have given less than 6% of their income to charity.  More incredibly, Joe Biden has given an average of $369 a year (.3% of his income) to charitable causes.  Of course Biden is the one who famously said it was our “patriotic duty” to pay more taxes.  He must regard this as charitable donations.  Pay more money to the federal government so that they can funnel more cash into impotent programs supposedly aimed at helping the unfortunate.  If that is the case, then our portion of tax dollars that go into those useless programs should be regarded as charitable donations that are tax exempt thus meaning we shouldn’t pay any tax at all for that.  Right?  Good luck making that argument in court.

The main point of this post is that individual citizens, communities, churches/religious organizations, charities and even businesses/corporations are more effective when it comes to aiding those in need.  That is the history of this nation.  Any charitable organization that mismanages money or allocates too much of its revenue to administrative expenses risks having its tax-exempt status yanked.  Yet similar government programs that are ineffective and bloated with bureaucracy and administrative costs are not subject to the same scorn and scrutiny.  What hypocrisy.

We don’t need more government.  We need more generosity, charity and giving  independent of government.  This maybe a tough sell in difficult economic times, but it is our tradition.  And it is what makes this nation unique.  Merry Christmas to all.  And don’t forget your neighbor this holiday season.

Some Hope For The GOP

The GOP will have to make some fundamental changes in order to recapture control of Congress.  But there might be another factor working in the GOP’s favor – demographics.  This is from a blog featured in the hometown paper (Fort Worth Star Telegram).

As usual, New England’s loss is Texas’ gain.

Election Data Systems, a political demographics consulting firm, reports that updated census figures from July show that Texas is due three extra seats in the US House, and that will rise to four seats by the time apportionment happens in 2010.

The losers: Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Texas will gain more members in the House than any other state, according to the report. Four other states – Florida, Georgia, Nevada, and Utah – would each gain a seat and Arizona would likely nab two. Depending on how population trends move in the next two years, Oregon, North Carolina and South Carolina might get extra seats too.

Notice all of the Southern states there (and Utah)?  That could be really good news for GOP chances in Congress.  Naturally, it will all depend on the areas within the various states that gain seats.  That will ultimately lead to issues of redistricting and charges of gerrymandering.  Not sure how this will work out, but it bodes well in that there are new House seats being allotted to traditionally GOP states.

We gotta take ‘em where we can get ‘em.

Merry Christmas All!!!

Ha!  I logged on this afternoon fully expecting that Mel or Steve might have beaten me to the punch in wishing all of our gayconservative.org family a Merry Christmas.  I was shocked to see that I would be first…..heh!

So, let me first start by saying Merry CHRISTmas.  Feel free to say it.  Not “Happy Holidays” or such, but Merry Christmas.  And I do wish all of our non-Christian friends a Happy Hannukah, Kwanza or whatever else.  No need to leave anyone out.  But I celebrate December 25th to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.  And I shouldn’t feel ashamed to say it.  There are many reasons to celebrate this time of year.

Thank you to all of our readers.  And thanks to all of you (especially Mel and Steve) who have been patient and supportive while I have been somewhat absent recently.  I feel like this is a mix of Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I’m always reflective as we move into the new year, and that thought always goes towards my friends and family.  I feel like the folks here at gayconservative.org are a mix of both.  You may literally be friends, but I will also dare to speak for Mel and Steve when I say – you are also part of our family as well.

So from me and my pup, Brodie, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. God bless all of you and may he keep you safe this holiday season.

From Iran, With Love

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the “president” of Iran, recorded a holiday message for the world to be played on Britain’s Channel 4. As is typical with him, Mr. Ahmindamoodforjihad spews lies and practically froths at the mouth in vague (but not unidentifiable) references to America:

“[If Jesus were alive, he would] stand with the people in opposition to bullying, ill-tempered and expansionist powers…If Christ were on earth today, undoubtedly He would hoist the banner of justice and love for humanity to oppose warmongers, occupiers, terrorists and bullies the world over.”

Say WHAT?!?

This is coming from the guy who called for the eradication of Israel. He also denied the holocaust as a “myth.”  I’m curious to know how he defines “warmongers, occupiers, terrorists and bullies” in light of what his religious police do:

farsbrutal001farsbrutal002

Those are toilet watering cans, used by Iranians in place of toilet paper, and the morality police are requiring these guys to suck on them…while they whip and mercilessly beat them.  They’re later taken away and punished further.

farsbrutal003farsbrutal004

Note to all the gay activists out there: THIS is what it looks like when you’re really stripped of your human rights!

farsbrutal0051farsbrutal006

What was their crime, you ask?  They were dressed in a manner deemed “too Western.”  Soccer jerseys are apparently a sin, as are blue jeans and shaggy hair.  I guess I’m going straight to hell!

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.  Someone look at these pictures and tell me that diplomacy is going to work with these guys.  I dare you.

It’s a little hard to take this guy seriously when all he does is lie like a fake Persian rug.  Then again, we’re talking about a Christmas message from a Muslim who wanted to lay a wreath at Ground Zero in memory of the hijackers who murdered 3,000+ innocent people.  He doesn’t even believe in Christ!

Smack me on the wrist now.  Bad Mel!  How Islamophobic of you!

The Greater Good

Sometimes I hate being human. Humanity makes me succeptible to all manner of painful things, be they physical, mental or emotional. Humanity makes me weak. I am imperfect and all too aware of it, and I have my humanity to thank for it.

I wonder how many people in this world really understand the concept of being human. Between what I see on the news, what I read on the blogs, and what I find in the paper, I get the feeling that people are beginning to forget that “only human” means we don’t always get it right.

There have always been people opposed to fighting wars. Even during WWII, a war we knew we couldn’t escape fighting, there were enough people opposed to abandoning diplomacy that it caught attention. Korea, Vietnam, the first Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq–many people have protested all of these conflicts in varying degrees. There are always those willing to fight for their belief that war is never the answer (kinda defeats the purpose, though, doesn’t it?).

The same people are typically supportive of gun control measures. Many countries outside of the United States have gone so far as to ban civilian ownership of firearms, most notably Great Britain and Australia in the past decade. Australia now has laws against non-kitchen knives, too. These folks typically say, “what do you need a weapon for? If you’re attacked, just call the police!” If only it were so simple.

The general theme running underneath all of this is that civilized people shouldn’t fight. The reason for that is they believe that all people are inherently good. And since good, rational people can carry on a conversation, we should just sit down and talk, right? Much like David Crosby going on Hardball with Chris Matthews and claiming that a concert is going to open dialoge with terrorists, more and more people are espousing the notion that negotiation is easy.

Don’t misunderstand me; talking rationally does work. I still believe that peaceful, civil means should be attempted first if circumstances allow. I’m not by any means saying that violence will save us all. That accusation (which I’ve gotten more than once) is just plain silly. But the suggestion that talking and getting our feelings out will solve all the world’s ills is equally as silly.

To get a good idea of how imperfect the world is, think closer to home. Have you ever had an argument with a friend or relative? What was the disagreement about, and why did you fight about it?

Everyone understands the language of romantic relationships because it’s something we’ve all dealt with (unless you’re a nun). Are you still with your first-ever significant other? Why not? What about your second, your third? You loved them, didn’t you? Why weren’t you able to keep the relationship alive? You should have been able to talk everything out, right? At what point did you realize that it wasn’t worth trying to fix anymore?

The answer to all of those questions is singular and simple: we’re all human. We’re all imperfect. Consequently, we won’t always get along, and some things we may never be able to work or talk through. If we are unable to calmly fix every little issue in our own lives, what makes us think all of these violent militants and terrorists are going to be willing to change their ways? Humanity, in all its imperfection, is rife with pain, disappointment, stubbornness and selfishness. Give a person the power of your trust and the opportunity to hurt you and it is guaranteed at some point they will let you down. That’s the way the world works.

If selfishness is genuinely so wrong, I fail to see anyone doing anything to change it. Maybe the question of whether we should stand and fight could be answered by taking a look at our own lives. I think it’s amazing that so many wish so much to make this world a better place. Peace is an admirable goal, one we should (and mostly do) all strive for. But is the greater good best served by a tacit refusal to fight? Or do we achieve more with the courage to do what really should be done?

Sure. They Really Deserve It!

This one doesn’t really need much commentary from me.  It kind of speaks for itself.

As Americans across the country grapple with one of the worst financial crises since the Great Depression, members of Congress quietly are getting a pay raise.

Each lawmaker’s annual salary is due for a $4,700 cost-of-living increase starting in January, which will amount to a cost to taxpayers of $2.5 million in 2009, infuriating watchdog groups.

Yup.  I’m a little on the “infuriated” side too.  But I’m a dumb conservative, grassroots hick.  What the hell do I know?  It’s good to know that there are some members of Congress looking to overturn this crap.

Earlier this year, Rep. Harry Mitchell, a first-term Democrat from Arizona, introduced legislation that would have stopped the automatic pay adjustments from kicking in for members next year. But the bill, which drew 34 cosponsors, died in committee.

Two other members of Congress, Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind, and Rep. Gresham Barrett, R-SC, also tried to block the wages but didn’t get very far. Burton plans to return his pay increase to the Treasury Department.

“As we face the most challenging economic crisis in our history, and with many Americans and Hoosiers enduring personal financial hardships, I am opposed to any pay increase for members of Congress in 2009,” he said in a written statement. He said he’ll try again next year.

But I don’t hear a huge outcry from the rest of Congress.  And you won’t hear much of an outcry from the public – this is stealth, people.  I guess Congress got tired of the typical public votes for pay raises and finally decided to institute a recurring scheme in order to duck accountability.  I’m sure the GOP was just as responsible as Dems for this BS.  They’re all in it for the wrong reasons.  That’s becoming more apparent everyday.

Brighten a Little Girl’s Christmas

I haven’t had much energy for anything lately, but I couldn’t resist this.  It’s rare that a story brings tears to my eyes but this one did it.  Tip o’ the hat to Michelle Malkin for posting this.

4-year-old Hannah Garman was diagnosed with a rare, incurable brain tumor in October, just two years after her mother died of cancer.  When asked what she wanted for Christmas, she simply asked for “lots of cards.”  Someone close to the family sent out an email last week, and the word has spread.  You can never send too many.  Here’s the address:

Hannah Garman
259 North Reading Rd.
Ephrata, Pa. 17522

To my police, EMS and firefighter friends, send pictures of your crews.  Let’s give this girl’s family a Christmas they’ll never forget.
