Gay Conservative

Well, yesterday came and went with little more than a sputter, a fizzle and a tiny little cough.  Watching my local Fox affiliate for news, everyone was kinda going, “huh?”  Their confusion was certainly warranted; they had no idea what it was all about until they started getting emails from local activists on Tuesday evening, and the footage I saw of the actual protest here at 7th Ave and Camelback was pathetic at best.  It included a gay man with a bullhorn leading chants, but with so few people to follow it really was kinda funny.

That was the extent of the amusement, however.  This ridiculous display has, yet again, made the gay community a laughingstock and I am embarassed beyond words.  I’m not embarassed that there were so few people participating, mind you–I’m absolutely appalled that the idea was suggested in the first place!  With only an estimated 2% of the total population identifying as gay or lesbian, and less than one-third of the population supporting us to such an extent, did we really think this was a good idea?  Oh, it was fantastic, guys, it sounds like something straight out of a Saturday Night Live skit.

There are so many valid, legitimate ways to get our point across and somehow we’ve managed to bypass every single one of them.  The hysteria of calling anti-gay marriage measures “hate” has had a horrible impact on our message, but we haven’t caught on yet.  We’re still trying to target churches for all of this and we’re missing one glaring problem: WE ARE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY.  We’re not answering the valid questions being raised by those who oppose gay marriage.  Instead, we’re flinging accusations of bigotry at them in a rabid push to shut them up.  We are worse than they are in many respects.

I hope to God that I don’t see another ridiculous show of idiocy like this again in my lifetime.  Please, folks, screw your heads on straight before you try this kind of thing.  It didn’t go over well when the illegals did it, and they have far greater numbers.  Start using your brain before you open your mouths and start making plans, please, because the rest of us have no desire to look like idiots.
