Price to Play

Since Steve lives in Chicago, I’m sure the news coming out of there comes as little to no surprise to him.  He makes a very good point; the media is, for the most part, saying, “Rod WHO?!?”  But because of their blatant refusal to look this in the face right now this instant, I’m gonna pitch a fit.  I’m so sick of hearing about how biased FOX News is from liberals that I’m about ready to scream, and FOX is the only news outlet that is putting this scandal at center stage, where it belongs.

Why should the rest of the media be honest and unbiased about it?  It might just hurt the image of their precious Obamessiah.

Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich has been arrested today on federal charges of bribery and corruption in a “pay to play” political scandal that could put him in prison for a very long time.  His wife and one of his deputies was in on it, too.  The biggest accusation–and this was all confirmed by wiretapped conversations–was that he was trying to sell President-Elect Barack Obama’s now-vacant senate seat.  He was caught saying this several times, in a variety of ways: “it’s a f—ing valuable thing.  You just don’t give it away for nothing.”

Next is the accusation that he attempted to influence the staffing at the Chicago Tribune.  The Tribune Company, the business that owns the Trib, had requested state funds due to their slouching sales; Blagojevich, angry over editorial columns in the Trib that were critical of him and Obama, basically told them they’d get their money if they got rid of the offending writers: “fire all those f—ing people, get them the f— out of there and get us some support.”  His wife chimed in on this one, too: “f— them,” she said during a conference call with the deputy and a Tribune Co. representative during a call about selling Wrigley Field and the Cubs, “hold up that f—ing Cubs s—!”

He was also involved in soliciting high-ranking government jobs for the highest bidder.  Chicago socialites such as Tony Rezko, Stuart Levine and Ali Ata were doing business with the state and giving political donations.  In return, Blagojevich was trying to secure state jobs and funding, as well as appointment to government commissions and boards.

What’s most disgusting to me, though, is the governor’s threat to yank back $8 million in state funding for a children’s hospital.  His reason?  He didn’t get the $50,000 political contribution that he wanted from the hospital.  That disgusts me more than I can say, because children’s medical issues and funding is a huge issue for me, particularly pediatric oncology research.  The hospital he threatened has a top-notch pediatric oncology team.  It also has the leading research on ADHD and has won awards for it’s treatment of cystic fibrosis.  That was what the governor was threatening, and it was all over a piss-ant political contribution.  He was caught on the wires literally saying on several occasions, “I’m in this to make money.”

Obama has denied being in contact with Blagojevich over his empty senate seat.  That’s funny, because Obama’s spokesman, David Axelrod, said something completely different about two weeks ago (something he’s now trying to recant–convenient).  Blagojevich was trying to use that senate seat to secure $300,000-a-year jobs for himself and his wife with unions and nonprofit organizations.

Obama involvement or no, the mainstream media’s attempt to fight tooth and nail to keep Sarah Palin in a negative spotlight any which way they can (as per Steve’s post today) is unbelievable.  ABC didn’t post this as big news until the evening edition, when it became clear that everyone wanted to know about it, and some other stations have yet to put it on the front section.  Blagojevich is facing a possible 30-year prison term and a $500,000 fine, and Yahoo! news is trying to slough it off.

Fair and balanced?  Puh-leeeeeze.  Of the past six Illinois governors, four have been convicted of corruption (the last one was sentenced to seven years in the clink).  28 Chicago aldermen have been convicted in the past decade.  I’d say this screams to put a stop to Chicago politics.  It also scares the hell out of me to find out what we’ve got in store for the next four years.  Obama has already shown his propensity for this kind of dirty game.

(Oh…and by the way, I am NOT calling in gay tomorrow.  That is just about the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my freakin’ life.)

What Did He Know?

You think I’m going to let the Blagojevich thing go for a day?  Not a chance.  This is pure gold.  Steve could probably speak to this better than I can, but it’s apparent that we are about to see what Chicago politics are all about.

This scandalous Dem machine will rear its head and take down a lot of folks.  If the MSM has anything to say about it, Obama will remain unscathed and above the fray, but there are some juicy questions out there.  Now we get to see if Patrick Fitzgerald is truly non-partisan or if he truly is a hack (as seems apparent in his prosecution of Scooter Libby).  What am I talking about?  Per the Chicago Sun-Times:

Blagojevich, 51, and Harris [his chief of staff], 46, both of Chicago, are each charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery. They were charged in a two-count criminal complaint that was sworn out on Sunday and unsealed today following their arrests, which occurred without incident, the feds said.

A 76-page FBI affidavit alleges that Blagojevich was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps during the last month conspiring to sell or trade Illinois’ U.S. Senate seat vacated by Obama for financial and other personal benefits for himself and his wife.

At various times, in exchange for the Senate appointment, Blagojevich allegedly discussed obtaining:

•                 A substantial salary for himself at a either a non-profit foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions.

•                 Placing his wife on corporate boards where he speculated she might garner as much as $150,000 a year.

•                 Promises of campaign funds — including cash up front.

•                 A cabinet post or ambassadorship for himself.

You need to click the Sun-Times link and read all of this stuff.  It’s unbelievable. Believe it or not ABC news actually brought up some good stuff concerning this mess on their website. Let’s figure out how much Obama knew.

Asked what contact he’d had with the governor’s office about his replacement in the Senate, President-elect Obama today said “I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening.”

But on November 23, 2008, his senior adviser David Axelrod appeared on Fox News Chicago and said something quite different.

While insisting that the President-elect had not expressed a favorite to replace him, and his inclination was to avoid being a “kingmaker,” Axelrod said, “I know he’s talked to the governor and there are a whole range of names many of which have surfaced, and I think he has a fondness for a lot of them.”

Ummmm….yeah.  Do tell, Mr. Axelrod.  Of course, Obama aides rushed out to insist that Axelrod “misspoke.”  Unlikely.  Looks like some major CYA going on here.  Obama might have never offered any carrots to Blago, but the statement that he never contacted the disgraced governor needs to be investigated thoroughly.  Even if no wrongdoing occured (which I doubt), Obama’s denial likely points to the fact that we are in for 4 more years of Bill Clintonesque parsing of words, outright lies and shady connections.  History repeats itself.

But consider further…..

But there remain questions about how Blagojevich knew that Mr. Obama was not willing to give him anything in exchange for the Senate seat — with whom was Blagojevich speaking? Did that person report the governor to the authorities?

And, it should be pointed out, Mr. Obama has a relationship with Mr. Blagojevich, having not only endorsed Blagojevich in 2002 and 2006, but having served as a top adviser to the Illinois governor in his first 2002 run for the state house.

I find it difficult to believe that Obama was that close to Blagojevich and yet had no discussions concerning his replacement in the Senate.  Blago was Obama’s “man” – good ole “Hot Rod.”

In 2004, then-Gov. Blagojevich enthusiastically endorsed Obama for the Senate seat after he won the nomination, and Obama endorsed Blagojevich for his 2006 re-election race in early 2005.

In the Summer of 2006, then-U.S. Sen. Obama backed Blagojevich even though there were serious questions at the time about Blago’s hiring practices.

I can’t even get into everything here.  As I type and surf the net, more crap is coming out about Tony Rezko (who has ties to Obama and Blago), Blago’s wife, his chief of staff.  This is a bomb.  The fact that some of the MSM is even bringing Obama into it speaks volumes to the severity of the situation.  I’m sure Obama’s henchmen are doing massive spinning and damage control.  We’ll see if Fitzgerald and the MSM actually do their job or if they white-wash this in short order.

Congratulations, ladies and gentlemen of the United States.  You voted for change.  And what you got was a political neophyte with socialist tendencies who is involved with characters like this.  You didn’t get change.  You got four more years of the Clinton administration.  I’m amazed at how naive the American electorate can be.  How can they be so susceptible to slick marketing?  Well, folks – you got what you voted for.  And I guarantee you that this is only the beginning.  Good luck with all that change shit.  Sorry to sound bitter.  I’m actually gloating.

Oprah Pouts over Palin (oh and Blagojevich is arrested, too)

While there is much to write and speak of over Governor Blagojevich and his arrest early this morning, I am going to put that aside and let the media rake it over a few times.

That’s not news to the liberal media anyway. I mean a liberal Governor actually puts a price on Obama’s Senate seat, then mentions occupying it himself in a taped telephone conversation I suppose isn’t enough to get it on the top of the news page (besides, liberals are still busy telling us how corrupt Governor Palin is).

Nope, on top of the news page today is Oprah’s statements.  First, she revealed her weight (wow!).  And secondly, she proclaimed that she was snubbed by Sarah Palin.

Sorry, I just have to stop now and let you watch for yourself.  The laughter is just too much on this end.
